Smart Sweets – Growing up in Vancouver, British Columbia, Tara Bosch would eat 5-cent penny candy like Starbursts and Skittles that she bought from the local convenience store almost every day. But when Bosch hit her 20s, she became more health-conscious and feared her love of sweets was harmful. She tried to eat less sugar but that only led her to crave candy even more, particularly one of her favorite sweets — sour gummy worms. Sick of the cycle and with a nudge from her grandmother Bosch set out to create a “healthier” alternative gummy bear without the excess sugar and artificial ingredients. Now four years after the company’s official launch, Tara’s Vancouver-based low-sugar candy company SmartSweets has five different gummy products ranging from Peach Rings to Sweet Fish and at age 24, Bosch is the boss, leading a team of 39 employees in both Canada and the U.S. All Smart Sweets are:

  • Free from sugar alcohols, artificial sweeteners and added sugar
  • Smartly sweetened with stevia, natural flavours and naturally-sweet fibers
  • Free from artificial flavors and colors
  • Packed with plant-based goodness
  • Made without major allergens including tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans, milk, eggs, fish, and shellfish

Life with kids is crazy and chaotic enough, so let’s give you one less mess to worry about. Bath & Body

So LuxuryIf you’ve been here for a hot minute, you’ll know just how much I love Só Luxury products. Not only are they a female owned local small BC company, but their products legitimately work. Living in the Prairies, the dry air is a sensitive skinned person’s nightmare and Só Luxury is one of the only brands that I can use without reacting to. My daughters also have dry skin and patches of eczema and this is all I use on them too. The coco oat soak, the coco oat bombs, the body oil, the magnesium spray – all amazing and worthy of an Easter Basket inclusion! (read my full blog review on these amazing products here)

Sweet as Candy Bath – Super fun bath products made especially for kids. With simple ingredients and only water soluble dyes, Katie makes everything by hand in small batches here in Calgary. Her bubble bath creates enormous bubbles with only 4 ingredients. Her bath bombs have a kaleidoscope of colours, and even fun options like surprise toys inside. She also makes bath powder, lip scrubs, body lotions and much more. An AMAZING addition to your Easter baskets this year. Code BOWS15 saves you 15% off everything!

Rocky Mountain Soap Company

RMSC is headquartered in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta. They are committed to producing toxin-free, cruelty free, and sustainable bath and beauty products with a commitment to simple ingredients. They ship with exclusively recyclable or compostable materials as well. I was gifted some of the baby collection at my baby shower when I was pregnant with my first child, and it is still some of our all time favourite products for kids. The baby bum balm is essential, and we love the bubble baths (no tears!). I love their entire adult line too (especially the bath salts).

Crafts & Creativity

Oak Village This is one of the most fun ideas for an Easter gift. For just $5.50 each, you can have Jessica (designer and creator of The Oak Village) draw you a digital poster with your child’s name on it! Getting it printed at Staples or another local printer is super quick and easy (I always opt for the 24″by36″ print at Staples) and provides a great art activity for kids. Extra special if your child has a unique name and personalized items are tough to find!

Bloom Blocks

Jocelynn is a talented Calgary maker who creates gorgeous wooden toys, loose parts, and my favourite – playdoh stampers. Great for sensory exploration, phonics, and early sight recognition – kids can stamp their playdoh and practice their letters at the same time!

Run Wild Play KitsJamie is a registered child psychologist, a doting mother, and a huge advocate of open-ended play. She works in early childhood education in Edmonton, and has a really strong academic background in supporting child development. All of her loose-parts kits, homemade playdoh, sensory bins, resin letters (and more) work beautifully to foster the all-around development of children. You can use code BOWSANDBENTOS10 to save 10% off your order.

Beyond Measure Boards– Tamara Clanfield (owner of Beyond Measure Boards) offers the most stunning keepsake reuseable milestone boards. She recently began offering these reusable colouring boards feature art from Jessica at The Oak Village (check her out above) and my girls adore these. Great for colouring in the car, you can wipe clean with a baby wipe or damp cloth and start all over again. We have several of her colouring boards and both my daughters have the Back To School milestone boards as well, we can vouch for their quality! You can use code BOWS10 to save 10% off your entire order.

Drops of Gratitude Spread the love and make it fun! This is a great exercise for the whole family. Simply print the FREE pdf, hang it up on your fridge and anytime a family member completes a square – mark it off! How long will it take to get a BINGO or black out? Great for any family and any budget.

Outdoor Fun

My favourite gifts to give for Easter are always outdoor fun. Umbrellas, bubbles, toys for the yard (water table, pool, magnifying glasses, bug catchers, gardening items, etc). I have curated a few lists on Amazon for all the best Easter ideas and lots of outdoor fun included! Last year, the strain on the system due to the pandemic meant that many outdoor items for kids were sold out extremely fast – I encourage folks who are looking to shop sooner rather than later this year to avoid disappointment.

Geometric climbers are SO fun for kids too. Great to learn strength, balance, and arm/core strength as they grow! I will link you to this one right here! (ships free to your door, great deal)

Apparel & Shoes

Jan and JulInspired by Vancouver’s greatest assets – its rain & its sun – in 2015, Twinklebelle Design created the brand Jan & Jul (January and July) to help kids & families stay outside longer, in all weather. The owner, Florence Luo, grew up in a cotton farming region in rural China. Florence learned everything about processing cotton – from hand spinning, dyeing to finally knitting & sewing the family’s clothing. At the age of 25, Florence left China on a scholarship to pursue a post-graduate engineering degree at the University of Minnesota. Florence worked as a mechatronics research engineer for several employers including the University of California and ASML, with two engineering patents registered under her name. With the birth of her two daughters, Florence’s inspiration skyrocketed in making comfortable and functional clothing for her children. Her original idea of adjustable sun hats was conceived and prototyped for her daughters while living in sunny California. This was the beginning of Florence’s Gro-With-Me® design concepts. Florence switched from working full time to teaching part-time at The University of British Columbia so that she could spend more time at home with her girls, and it was during this time that Twinklebelle Design was born. Now, Florence’s drive comes from wanting to empower women in Canada & China by supporting them through fair wages and a flexible work schedule. Giving back has always been a priority for Florence – from education scholarships to donating to the World Food Organization.

We have SO many Jan and Jul products now and love them all. The breeze knit shoes are the PERFECT water shoe, the sunglasses are great for kids 0-8, the sunhats come in so many colours and are a summer staple. Anything they sell would be perfect in your Easter baskets this year. From March 15-31, 2021 (inclusive), you can use code BOWS10 to save 10% off your entire order as well!

Jacks MamasDenise started Jack’s Mama back in 2014 when she began making slippers for her son, Jack. She wanted to create a pair of slippers that were warm and cozy, kept his ankles warm while she was baby wearing and created at an affordable price point! When she isn’t creating the softest slippers of all time, she is working hard as a pediatric nurse. Her prices are so reasonable, and we love the flexibility of being able to roll the slippers down to customize the height we want for that particular day. Slippers are always loved around here. You can use code BOWS15 for 15% off your order, anytime.

Lost In LayersLost In Layers began in 2015 when Lindsay was at a loss for new trends and good quality fashion while living in a more isolated city. Lost In Layers’ goal, first and foremost, is to encourage women to feel great about themselves. Lindsay designs knowing the garments make women of any age, stage, shape and style feel comfortable, confident and beautiful. Her goal is to use high quality fabrics with a strict attention to every detail to create pieces to last as staples through the seasons in your wardrobe. The line is ethically produced in Calgary, Alberta as well as employing women who work from home. She offers a size inclusive range of XS-3X and you can use code BOWS15 to save 15% off your order.

Mi and FiMi & Fi is brought to you by 2 Calgarian moms, Vicki and Leah, based out of Calgary, Alberta.  Focusing on quality and unique styles for babies, toddlers, and women. Inspiration is drawn from basic designs that offer versatility to broadcast the sass and funk of a child’s personality.  The name Mi and Fi comes from their very own minis, Mia, Miles, and Fiona. You can use code BOWSANDBENTOS to save 15% off your entire order as well!

Rowe ApparelFounded by Barbara Backman, with the help of her husband Niall, and inspired by their three children, ROWE believes clothing can be functional, unfussy and stylish. It all started with the realization that snaps were the worst. In Barbara’s postpartum haze after the birth of her first daughter, she truly felt that snaps had no place on children’s clothing. She loved the aesthetic of a one-piece romper and its laid-back vibe, but snaps just weren’t practical. Babies are too wiggly, fussy and impatient for that. After countless prototypes and an obsessive search for the perfect fabric, zipper, pattern and fit – the Zomper was born! Barb realized she’d found a new passion for kids clothing and a missing market for the certain type of athleisure wear she was coveting for her kids. Today, along with the game changing Zomper, ROWE is working on new garment designs that align with that same vision. ROWE is not fast fashion. They want the clothes to look great, from your first child to your last. Made in Calgary, Alberta with YKK zippers from Quebec and labels from Toronto, they make sustainable and ethical clothing, conscious of the future generations we’re dressing. ROWE is designed for parents who don’t accept status quo snaps. We make it easy to dress active families without compromising style. It’s their mission to create convenient, casual, sustainable garments that last. From their zompers (sized for newborn up to age 10 now), to their fleece jackets, to their silky soft lounge suits, and now their adult offerings, Rowe is committed to slow, ethical, sustainable fashion.

Gifts for Grown Ups!

Kozy Haus– Another super talented Calgarian, Nicole hand-knits these gorgeous large chunky throws – perfect for your couch, bed, guest room, and more! We have a couch throw and a king bed runner from her and believe me when I say, these blankets are softer than a baby’s fresh-outta-the-bath tush. You can use code RACHEL10 to save 10% off your order.

Makers Candle Supply

The Makers story began in Vancouver with two friends driven by the same passion to create.

Locally handcrafted and always poured in small batches, they pride themselves on our uniquely blended fragrances.

With a 40 + hour burn, their scents are composed of a distinctive blend of perfume grade fragrance oils and essential oils, all of which are phthalate free. Their candles contain a cotton-core wick and 100% non-GMO soy wax , which is a petroleum-free, renewable resource allowing for both a cleaner and longer burn. They also donate a portion of their proceeds to the The Strathcona Community Centre (SCC), which is located in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, BC and offers several programs to the families and children nearby. The Backpack Program of SCC provides nutritious snacks and meals to fill the “hunger gap” of the weekend when children are not supported by the school food programs they depend on during the week. Every Friday, children are able pick up a bag filled with a variety of foods representing the basic nutritional food groups. My all-time fave candle is their smoked tobacco (available in a candle or reed diffuser). You can use code BOWSBENTOS10 to save 10% on your entire order and code FREESHIP60 to get free shipping on orders $60+.

Land of Daughters Another fave local maker of mine, Paige, is the brilliant Métis woman behind Land of Daughters. All small batch made here in Calgary, she has some of the most intricate and emotion-evoking scents I have ever come across. You can check out her entire scent profile page on her website (note that you can buy scent samplers to narrow down your choices), and her Spring collection just dropped which is also divine. She makes most of her scents in room/body sprays and hard perfumes too, which is great for folks who may not be into candles. So worth checking out!

Buttercream Clothing Eight years ago, Candice started making cakes in an effort to stay home with her new baby. From there she was inspired to make vintage-style aprons and Buttercream Aprons sprang to life. Word quickly spread that she was a talented seamstress and requests for clothing came flooding in. Buttercream Clothing was born! Candice gathered a team of local home seamstresses and sought out a factory that met her criteria of ethical, local, well-made fashion. Buttercream has come a long way from its humble beginnings at her kitchen table. What hasn’t changed is her views on providing fashion that you can feel good about purchasing. Every piece is made from scratch with love and care right here in Calgary, Alberta. Candice believes in giving women in business an opportunity to shine and grow. She now employs over 25 local women ranging from virtual assistants to seamstresses and is committed to raising up women in business. Her clothing quite literally “feels like butter”! A gift card would make a great Easter gift, or feel free to shop the whole collection (turn-around time is 8-10 weeks to allow the local seamstresses to sew up your goodies). Code BOWS20 saves you 20% off everything, always!

Chapters indoor gardening essentialsI have taken such a huge liking to gardening in the past few years. It requires a decent amount of patience and love, but it is so rewarding. Chapters has a whole lot of indoor gardening essentials from pots to seed kits and much more, perfect for anyone looking to turn their thumbs a little more green this year.

Loon and BloomJacqueline and Janae are the ladies behind the brand and they started Loon & Bloom from a desire to bring beautiful, comfortable, quality made house dresses to Canadian women. Jacqueline was given a house dress by Janae during her last pregnancy and quickly understood Janae’s obsession with them! They soon began talks about starting a Canadian house dress brand and Loon & Bloom was born. They went to work designing, sourcing quality fabric, and looking for local manufacturers who employ ethical practices. Their dresses are proudly designed and ethically produced in our home province of Alberta. They love the versatility of the house dress. Whether you want a dress to wear to bed, a dress for night on the town, or anything in between, these dresses are perfect and are designed to be effortless, stylish, and comfy. They are for women in every stage of life, and are maternity and nursing friendly. They believe that no matter what season of life you are in, you can look and feel beautiful without sacrificing comfort. They wanted to have a Canadian element to their name and we loved the symbolism of the Loon. Not only is the Loon a Canadian symbol, but it is a symbol of serenity and it teaches us to follow our hopes, dreams and wishes. For them, the word Bloom means to flourish and thrive wherever we find ourselves in life. It means finding joy in who we are and fully accepting and loving ourselves. Their goal is to create an inclusive community of women who do just that- flourish and follow their dreams, all while wearing the most beautiful house dresses, of course! Their Spring line launches March 15th at 9am MST, and you can use code BOWS15 to save 15% off your entire purchase.
